Hactl Handles Largest SuperLink China Direct Shipments from Martinair

16th October 2000
Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 16 October 2000 - As a further indication of the growing popularity of its recently launched SuperLink China Direct service, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd. (Hactl) today handled its largest SuperLink China Direct shipments of 31 tonnes on behalf of Martinair, a regular customer of the new service.

SuperLink China Direct is Hactl's recently introduced integrated air cargo service that uses a high-speed sealed trucking service to transfer air cargo between Hong Kong International Airport and Guangzhou's Baiyun airport.

Under this service goods designated as SuperLink China Direct shipments are collected by Hactl's subsidiary, Hacis and placed on dedicated trucks which are sealed at the Huanggang border control point prior to continuing on to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport where customs clearance takes place.

Today's consignment was the second part of a total of 53 tonnes of consolidation shipments arriving from various destinations of Europe on 7th and 12th October. The first shipment of 22 tonnes was transported to Guangzhou on schedule on 11th October. Today's consignment was loaded by staff from Hactl's subsidiary, Hacis on 4 Hacis trucks before departing at 8:30 am. After being sealed by China customs at the Huanggang border check-point, the trucks proceeded to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and delivered the cargo on time at 1:30 p.m. The consignee was then able to complete customs clearance formalities and collect the shipment.

Mr Merwin Liu, Airport Manager of Martinair said, "At Martinair, our strength lies in our ability to offer optimum flexibility to customers. This philosophy goes hand in hand with Hactl's innovative SuperLink China Direct service, which offers a seamless, reliable and quick integrated air cargo service to the Mainland. We are confident that the network that Hactl and its partner Sinotrans offers us with this service will enable us to exploit new opportunities to increase cargo traffic between our network in Europe and cities all over the Mainland.

Mark Ashall, Managing Director of Hacis said, "Since its successful launch in July, the response has been encouraging. To date, we have already signed up 16 customer airlines for the service, and the service itself with an average transportation time of between 4 and 5 hours between Hactl and Baiyun airport, has proved to be fast and reliable. It is a measure of confidence that both Sinotrans and ourselves have in the prospects for the new service that we have recently rented a new significantly larger warehouse at Baiyun airport.

"To further enhance the service, we are adding functions to assist our computer system, COSAC (Community System for Air Cargo) to include SuperLink China Direct customers. By early next year, they will be able to check their shipment status via either COSAC, Hactl's website, hactl.com or our telephone hotline, HACTEL. COSAC will also extend its automatic notification function to inform registered SuperLink consignees of the details of a shipment's arrival in Guangzhou by fax or email.

"Based on the positive response to this new service from the community, once we have agreed procedures with the relevant authorities, we also plan to introduce a similar import service for perishables as well as a southbound service for export goods. We believe that intermodal services such as these, which help to streamline the supply chain are an important element in the community's ongoing efforts to strengthen Hong Kong's position as Asia's leading air cargo hub.
